OUZO

The US National Debt stands at 57.000 USD per citizen.
The Greek National Debt stands at 43.000 USD per citizen.
So what’s the big deal?
To who is this money owed?
Who is asking for it?
This stuff never gets paid back, it just melts under the sun.
When in need, just print more of it, create some inflation.
The only places without inflation, skid row and our cemeteries!

So this call girl I know with a slight speech defect, joined a Golf Club to pick up some business.

And she didn’t do badly!

The first time she played a round, she scored a couple of Bars and three Fogeys.

Russians

This is not about Putin but how Russians seem to massively support this complex-ridden little guy, and shows how far they’ve come: not very far, not yet!

I have met and observed a good number of Russian individuals and I still have to find one who’s truly free, smiling, generous, leaning back relaxed, self-confident. Everything about him tending to be defensive, neck sunk well into shoulders accompanied by some docile wife, respectful only of confrontation, expecting it, and when it doesn’t seem to be forthcoming, dishing it out himself: a big, sulking child.

For it is the only way he knows how to express himself, lacking any level of personal sophistication and growth. And therefore both continually suspicious and deeply unsure with the primitive way forward to block, aggress, and intimidate in the way that the State did to him for a millennium, all the while trying to suppress that irrational, contemporary fear in him.

Slavs still truly slaves to their past and their moral evolution still a century behind the free world despite the latter’s one-out-of-twenty dreadful anomaly of German Nazism, and despite their more recent, relative political and material progress.

For nobody has it in for them, they’re not under threat; they’ve been welcomed everywhere except there where they themselves abused for decades on end, with all the savagery available to them: those small, fearful nations begging to be protected by NATO, not the case of the USA ‘aggressing’ and ‘encircling’ a Russia typically paranoid.

I mean, we all understand an oppressive ruling entity constantly invoking the outside threat, as it helps keeping it in power. But this is not the 18th century, people ignorant, ensnared and scared. This is the 21st Century, millions of Russians travelling all over, having Internet access, foreign TV, above everything able to compare. Why on earth would they believe this crap? Are they this ignorant, still? And as a consequence Russian ‘diplomacy’ still gun-boat, tank and bomber oriented, mainly for domestic ‘pride’!?

Hence also my dictum that Nations and people continually needing to project supposed strength and superiority, in fact suffer from an adolescent sense of inferiority and dangerous not for what is in their hands, but for what is in their head.

And that before a Nation or a people can be truly free, individual independence must have taken place.

Which is not the case with the average Russian I know, still hanging on to Madre Patria ‘s embrace and suffering from a type of nostalgia reflecting the constant necessity for heroes far larger than himself.

In addition a Nation’s revolution or first break with the past, however significant, generally gets followed by and is subjected to a much shorter period of retrograde action before settling into a more permanent mode of free existence, the one step forward and two backwards syndrome, as seen with the time-scaled disappearance of old style dictatorships in places like Chili, Mexico, Tunisia, and now, still in the middle of it, Putin’s Russia.

And there’s nothing we can do, except try and contain the damage and hope the Russian people themselves will come around and display their personal independence and self-confidence.

The only question: which generation will step up to the plate believing in itself, rather than in some little guy, the Military and the Kremlin and the brooding yarns they spin? Filling their huge, insatiable pockets in the process!

High Provincialism vs the Universal

Breakfast-prayer Conservatives are against Universal Healthcare, because

they are feral individualists incapable of accommodation, with personal rights

to the Gospel.

They say Social Care leads to godless Socialism, so that understandably God forbids it

and they must fight it..

Talk about circular, pocket book caressing reasoning, that is if one can call it reasoning.

Of Moustaches

It was always a mystery to me where Hitler got all the money to arm himself to the teeth. At this point he hadn’t invaded anybody, or got cheap slave labour from the countries that he would later attack. The Weimar Republic was on its arse, inflation running at 100 000%, the entire outside world sunk into a deep depression, and the reason our boy got elected to Reich’s Chancellor in the first place: yes he was democratically elected by a desperate and defeated people.

Germany doesn’t have much in the way of natural resources, so where did he get the inital materials and loot to pull Germany out of its rut with public works and feverish arms production? How did he pay? Who gave him credit? You tell me!

But then I read this, as a follow up, written by P.G.Wodehouse, while in Berlin, where he had been kept in detention:

The situation in Germany had come up for discussion, and it was generally agreed that Hitler was standing at the crossroads and would soon be compelled to do something definite. His present policy, said a Whisky and Splash, was mere shilly-shallying. “He’ll have to let it grow or shave it off. He can’t go on sitting on the fence like this. Either a man has a moustache, or he has not. There can be no middle course.”

And then it hit me. I had stumbled upon a magnificent metaphor for his later foreign policy, somehow beefing up his armed forces with absolutely nothing for them do or to look forward to, plus sporting a horrendous debt: He had to do something or the whole damn thing would have collapsed like a Ponzi scheme. Refusing to ‘Shave them off’, he chose to attack. And attack. And attack.

And the rest is bloody history!

Bubblenomics

When people can no longer afford where they live, when people start taking the bus, when adults start moving back in with their parents, or share apartments with others they hardly know, when people start renting out rooms in order to pay their electricity bill, and banks don’t know what to do with repossessed homes, when this takes place on a wide scale and for many years to come, when the State can’t collect enough to cover its bills and has to cut vital services not replacing retiring workers… it is that a nation is getting poorer, losing its wealth, or at least the one it thought it had, but that probably never quite existed.

So what we’re seeing everywhere really, is countries and people getting poorer, getting stuck once more with and in a huge underclass, all that whipped up phantom wealth melting snow under a forbidding sun.

Of course, it’s nice to do well for a while, except most forget this is the exception, not the rule, living high off the hog too long. Some taking it philosophically, others not so well, after the bubble bursts. The question is do we want to live like this, on the run, under exciting but explosive bubblenomics or take an honest step back, living more evenly, not stepping around the returning homeless, on our sidewalks, having whatever there really is, distributed equitably?

This is how I expressed from another angle, under Poems in my website:

Eighth Floor Second

No matter what you read

No matter what they say

and sounds like war

World crisis

is never Armageddon

but

a set of reversals

in the Babylonian building of Finance

whereby

occasionally

Basement becomes Penthouse,

Third floor First,

Eighth floor Second

with the sad stupidity

of rapacious

architecture

evident

Once

more

Death to Riches

Destruction creates wealth. Calling it renewal, sounds better.

Voodoo Economics

The same experts telling other people they don’t save enough, constantly entice them to spend more in order to keep the economy going. And how is it they get to keep their job?

LOCUST-R-US

Certainly not all, but all the wile and cunning it takes to reach the top, leaves many completely addicted to the chase but soon enough losing all sight of the only objective.

The great irony that what it takes to become a major, even historic decision-maker leaves one voiceless when the time comes to speak out or think beyond the immediate.

At Davos 2009 nobody seems to worry about your children and grandchildren. While trying of course to fix the current, rather too drastic world economic decline, nobody has time for trivial questions like a planet unable to sustain ‘Western’ industrial life style to begin with. Let alone making it universal, that is 3 billion Chinese and Indians owning 2 residences, 3 cars per family and taking 3 vacations a year in Hawaii, Paris and Samoa and to which they’re as entitled as Mr. Mrs. J. Blow from Wichita Falls.

That while consumerism is still the best way to distribute wealth, there is the matter of waste, garbage, raw materials and climate change to consider.

That therefore, demographically speaking, far fewer people are a ‘must’, still complicated by them living longer than ever. And technology making half this brave new world’s workforce redundant in less than a couple of centuries or so, the thought of how to keep these people fed and busy or let Darwinian observation prevail, not such a remote idea at all.

Society sooner than later reaching the threshold of having to pay a lot of people to stay at home and stop ‘producing’, or at least perform social duties in exchange for guaranteed income, preventing them from gratuitous thrill seeking or the falling into personal depression and crime.

That a conference decade upon decade blindly focusing on ‘Now’, on ‘Growth’, on ‘Development’, concerned with ‘Gain’, always ‘Bigger’, ‘Better’, ‘More’ and still… ‘More’ is a conference of the visionless, unable to view the soft-landing, intelligent economic reduction of nations the future demands, while hanging onto our planet for dear life…

Or better still, hanging on to our dear planet for life. But what to expect from decision-makers repeatedly found to be mostly smiling, always smiling but ambitious, blatant buskers performing only on the pavements of history. Their show one day turning out to have been a mere side show. A prelude, to continuation… or life zero.

Ah, yes, details! After the photographs, let’s do dinner, Your Excellencies!
